For a typical gate extending from the surface with a 170 cm rise and a 4 m clear opening, the internal pocket dimensions should be approximately 4.4 × 3.0 × 0.7 m. Inside this space must fit the gate itself, the counterweight, a water pump, the drive unit, and enough room for an installer to carry out assembly and servicing. Space is tight.

Wall thickness for smaller underground gates ranges from 15 to 30 cm. The pocket is a reinforced, concrete-poured structure and can be cast in place on site or delivered as a prefabricated element by a specialist reinforced-concrete contractor. For the best results, we recommend having the pocket cast on site by a qualified structural concrete firm.

The automatic underground gate uses a carefully calibrated counterweight system. The counterweight is set so that in the event of a power failure or drive fault, the gate can be pushed down into the pocket manually. This is a key safety feature of any reliable retractable gate system.

For gates up to 4 m wide fabricated from lightweight aluminium profiles, the mechanized retractable gate is light enough to be slid in or pulled out by hand using a dedicated hook. For heavier configurations, a special attachment fitted to a standard household cordless drill raises the gate — a practical solution that is part of the standard automatic hidden gate specification.

The gate with hydraulic drive or motorized drive operates via the same mechanism for underground gate in all cases. As a rough comparison, the force required to move the gate is similar to the force needed to move a sliding gate with a clear opening twice as wide — because the total moving mass includes both the gate leaf and the counterweight.

One consideration for a hidden retractable driveway gate or automatic retractable fence system installed on gravel or sand driveways is that small stones and grit carried on tyres can work their way into the gap between the palisade and the cover opening. This may cause surface scratches that require repainting. It is not a serious problem: every individual palisade is demountable and can be sent for recoating independently. Ordering a few spare pre-painted palisades for quick replacement is also a practical solution.

To minimise scratching on your disappearing driveway gate, keep the driveway as clean as possible and carry out annual cleaning of the entire roller mechanism — ideally after winter.

Water naturally enters the pocket during rainfall. This is handled by a pump installed at the bottom of the pocket in a dedicated sump, which discharges water to a nearby stormwater gully. That gully must have a free outlet — for example, into the street drainage network.

Where an underground retractable security gate is installed on a sloped driveway, additional linear drainage should be fitted to reduce the volume of water reaching the reinforced-concrete pocket. This applies equally to any gate hiding underground on a site with challenging drainage conditions.

Heating strips mounted beneath the covers ensure that the popup gate mechanism remains operational in cold weather. The strips activate automatically via a temperature sensor once the ambient temperature falls below +5 °C. This ensures that the roller mechanism of the gate that rises from the ground does not freeze and that the covers remain clear of snow — keeping your rising or lowering remote gate ready to operate year-round.

The safety standard of the automatic rising gate matches that of conventional sliding gates. Photocells halt movement of the pop up gate if an obstacle is detected within the clear opening.
